The PILP, in cooperation with the Clara Wichmann Proefprocessenfonds, has requested several legal researchers to investigate the applicability of the Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in cases of alleged public sexism. The PILPG has conducted research into this topic.
The first research of the PILPG, entitled Sexism in advertising: international framework under the CEDAW, analyzes the relevant provisions of the CEDAW regarding advertisements that contain negative gender stereotypes or sexist content, and it looks into the way the CEDAW Committee has dealt with cases of sexism in advertising in the past. This research also discusses the obligations of State parties in this context.
The second research, entitled Legal frameworks regarding sexism in advertising: comparison of national systems, demonstrates that regulatory bodies in neighboring countries such as France, Germany and the United Kingdom, among others, do in fact look into the question of whether advertisments contain gender stereotypes or sexist content when assessing the content of certain advertisements.
